Melvin Good Calf Barn

The other day I sat down with Melvin to talk about his calf barn.  Melvin built his barn in 2012.  He previously kept his calves in a pen under his bank barn.  Melvin was experiencing a large amount of disease in his calves and wanted to get them into individual pens further away from the adult calves.  His barn is a good example of a three sided, naturally ventilated barn with individual pens.  He also has group housing at one end for weaned animals and a room in the middle that has a pasteurizer and area to clean buckets and store feed.  The indivual pens open up to allow easy clean up with a skid loader, and a tarp is able to be rolled over the top of the pens when the weather is cold.  The improvements have greatly improved the health of the calves and he is very happy with the whole set-up.
