National Ice Cream Day

Did you know...one of America's favorite treats has it's own nationally recognized day!  This year National Ice Cream Day is on July 18th. 

To help celebrate National Ice Cream Day, here are some fun facts:

  • Thomas Jefferson wrote down the first known ice cream recipe recorded by an American.
  • Boston was the first place ice cream was industrially produced in the United States in 1851.
  • During prohibition, many distilleries in the U.S. switched to making ice cream.
  • In 1984 President Ronald Reagan declared the third Sunday of the Month as National Ice Cream Day.
  • California is the largest producer of ice cream in the United States.
  • 90 % of American households consume ice cream.
  • The average American consumes more than 20 pounds of ice cream each year.
  •  Texas holds the world record for the longest ice cream sundae ever created.
  • In 2020, ice cream makers in the United States churned out just over 1 billion gallons of hard ice cream, up 6% from 2019, according to USDA data.
  • Fortune Business Insights estimates the global ice cream market will reach $91.9 billion in 2027, up from $70.9 billion in 2019.
