June Dairy Month

New Pittsburg Large Animal Clinic appreciates all of our hard-working dairy farmers! For June Dairy Month we wanted to have some fun, so we compiled a list of fun facts about the dairy industry along with a little history. We hope you enjoy our list, and happy June Dairy Month!

  • June Dairy Month started in 1937 to celebrate the contributions by the dairy industry. It originally was called National Milk Month and ran from June 10-July 10. In 1939 the title was changed from National Milk Month to June Dairy Month. The reason for the change was to focus on the greater use of dairy products.
  • There are 300 varieties of cheese made from cow's milk sold in the United States.
  • Americans consume over 300,000 tons of yogurt a year.
  • It takes approximately 50 licks to finish a single scoop of ice cream in an ice cream cone.
  • Butter is yellow because of the natural pigment of carotene which comes from the cow's diet of hay, silage, and grain.
  •  Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET holds the record for the most milk produced in a single lactation by a Holstein. She produced 72,170 pounds of milk which is equivalent to 8,295 gallons of milk!
